Guide to the Southern Great Barrier Reef
Majestic manta rays, islands teeming with turtles, lush rainforest and beautiful surf breaks; there’s a reason why we say the ‘great’ starts here.
The Southern Great Barrier Reef is a mecca for mesmerising marine life. It’s here, at the start of the world’s largest coral reef system, where chilled-out turtles, majestic manta rays and friendly humpbacks rule the waters – and you’re invited to join them. Above the water, you can kick back on an uninhabited island, enjoy a little rum fun in Bundaberg or say g’day to the locals while riding the east coast’s most northerly surf. Further inland, swap your blue hues for vivid green rainforest where glistening gorges and ancient caves comprise the Capricorn Coast.
Things to do on the Southern Great Barrier Reef
Meet baby turtles at Mon Repos
It’s hard not to say ‘aww’ when you witness baby turtles waking up to the world for the very first time. Head to Mon Repos from November to March to see endangered loggerhead turtles nest and hatch, or visit in January to catch their very first steps.
Ride the reef
The reef’s not just for snorkelling; in Agnes Water and nearby Seventeen Seventy you’ll find Queensland’s most northerly surf beaches. Known for their epic breaks and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the ultimate place to hang out and hit the waves.
Swim with manta rays
Swimming often evokes feelings of serenity, but add a giant gliding manta ray to the equation and you’ll experience the true wonder of the reef. Encounter these graceful marine animals at Lady Elliot Island, known as the ‘home of the manta ray’.
Try Australia’s most famous rum
If you’re in the mood for a tipple or two, say the word “Bundy” to any bartender and get ready to lock lips with the iconic Bundaberg Rum. It’s dark, sweet and everything you’d hoped for. Blend your own or take a tour at the town’s rum distillery.
See the humpback highway
Witness the legendary humpback highway as thousands of gentle giants journey up the east coast on their annual migration. Take a boat trip for an up-close encounter, as whales cruise through the water before you with their newly born calves.
Sleep on an idyllic island
Dotted along the turquoise ocean and colourful reef are enchanting uninhabited islands and coral cays coated with lush rainforest, white-sand beaches, luxury eco-resorts and nature-enveloped campsites. Discover the best secret islands to escape to.
Discover ancient caves
North of Rockhampton is the captivating Capricorn Caves. Lay your eyes on the beguiling limestone walls while listening to ancient tales or grab a headlamp to uncover the cave’s hidden pockets and rare wildlife. Find a cave tour to suit you.
Explore Carnarvon Gorge
Nestled deep in the Capricorn Region is the Carnarvon Gorge National Park; a nature-lover's paradise lined with prehistoric cliffs, ancient art and the spectacular Carnarvon Gorge. Here’s how to explore the park’s outstanding natural beauty.
Beach hop on Great Keppel Island
On Great Keppel Island you’ll find not one, but seventeen serene beaches to kick back on. Stroll through the island’s walking track – spotting rainbow-hued butterflies along the way – to remote beaches where protected waters teeming with fish await.
Say g’day to nesting turtles
One of the most magical experiences on the Southern Great Barrier Reef is found on Heron Island, home to fish-filled waters and plentiful numbers of nesting turtles. Take a boat or seaplane from Gladstone to catch these memorable moments.
Hire a private island
If you thought hiring a tropical island was just for the celebrities of the world, think again. Gather your guests for a private escape to the picturesque Pumpkin Island, a remote (but affordable!) slice of paradise just 45-minutes from Yeppoon.
Hike across an inactive volcano
Hikers, you’re in luck. Along the coast you’ll find a wealth of nature trails, all offering equally epic views. Venture through rainforest vines, historic towns, glistening grasslands – and don’t miss the volcano. Discover the Capricorn trails.
